NBA All-Star Never Fashion Out: Kobe vs. LeBron

Kobe Bryant scored 37 points & earned his record-tying fourth MVP award at last night's NBA All-Star Game.

LeBron James, meanwhile, led the Eastern Conference to an unexpected comeback in the fourth quarter & recorded the second triple double in the history of this storied exhibition game.

But the actual battle between the best players in the league took place prior to the game, as Kobe & LeBron both walked the T-Mobile sponsored red carpet in Los Angeles. Which baller slam-dunked his opponent in a match-up of fashion choices? You tell us.

Academy Awards Never Fashion Out: Lindsay Lohan's vs. Natalie Portman

Lindsay Lohan goes to court a lot and looks so FINE doing a perp walk, they cannot help but analyze her courtroom couture every other month or so.

Natalie Portman belongs to an exclusive club.

No, they are not referring to Best Actress winners, although Portman did take home that trophy at last night's Academy Awards and Berry did the same in 2001.

But those honors are nothing compared to the inclusion of these beauties in a THG Fashion Face-Off. Below, we have posted picas of both Halle and Natalie on the red carpet. Whose dress do you prefer? Who pulled off her look better?

BET prizes Never Fashion Out: Justin Bibber vs. Jaden Smith

Chris Brown may have dominated the BET Awards on stage last night, but a pair of young studs caught everyone's attention on the red carpet.

That is where they found Justin Bieber & Jaden Smith, both looking as cute as ever & both posting for photographers.

Justin would later present Best Male Hip Hop Artist to Kanye West, flirting with Nicki Minaj & saying he could handle her curves. Yikes! Watch that awkward video HERE & then vote below:

I'm completely addicted to Offspring and anyone else who feels the same way, doesn't need me to explain why. I'm not even going to attempt to explain it to those who don't watch it, just know this, you are seriously missing out!

MaNoKin Designs: Cirque du Manique/ Best of Costumes (Comic Expo 2011)

Two events I liked to talk about in this entry: (1.) MaNoKin Designs: Cirque du Manique (2.) Calgary Comic Expo 2011.

(1.) Saturday night was Calgary based MaNoKin Designs fashion event: Cirque du Manique hosted at Sociale Bar and Grille.
Top left: Reserved table for Calgary Fashion Bloggers :-)
Bottom left: me and Eleven:Eleven store owner Lana
Right: Models and MaNoKin designer Marsina King

The event showcased MaNoKin Designs Fall 2011 collection and a portion of the evening's proceed goes to Japan tsunami relief. Designer of MaNoKin Designs, Marsina King graduated from Ryerson University in Toronto. This is actually my first time taking a closer look at Marsina's designs.
MaNoKin Designs Fall 2011 Collection

This season's collection revealed a mysterious, playful and sexy look. Mysterious because every piece on the runway gave me a surprise. One after another, I was unable to predict what comes next. Playful because Marsina incorporated the concept of XX/XY in her collection. Some of the designs had a taste of unisex-flare to it. Sexy because the designs also emphasized women's sex appeal. Many people showed up that night at the event, including some of our Calgary's favourite fashion bloggers:

Saturday night was a beautiful night. It was perfect to take a snap-shot of the Fashion Central.

(2.) Last week was also the 2011 Calgary Comic Expo. Like I mentioned from one of my previous posts. I was always excited to see the kinds of costume people put on. Below were some of my top picks:
Top row (left to right): Flash; Ghost Rider; Scorpion; Heavy armor knight
Bottom row (left to right): Galactus; Mario Bros; Blackcat; Halo (blue)
Top: Ghostbusters
Bottom: Rima Tohya from Vampire Knights; R2D2 from Star Wars

I was quite happy with the fact that there were more cosplays at the expo this year than the one previous. :-) One more thing that I noticed there were more this year was LEGO booths.
…and of course, the major guest of honor at the expo: The Star Trek legend: William Shatner.

Trend Spotting: Red Suits

Pictured: Ashley Olsen, Penelope Cruz and Miroslava Duma

So when it comes to red, I’m never surprised to see red lips, red nail polish, red shoes or most recently, red pants (as featured in this month’s Mylookbook magazine), but to be honest, when I first saw the all red suit ensemble on Miroslava Duma in early 2010, I was initially taken aback at the outfit choice, I felt neutral in my like/dislike opinion but didn’t necessarily think it was a look that would be replicated, let alone emerge as a trend.

Just over a year later and Ashley Olsen and Penelope Cruz have both stepped out in red suits. I happened to be watching the morning show a few weeks ago and Lisa Wilkinson was even wearing a red jacket and identical red top underneath.

I’m not convinced that it’s a look I'll be trying myself anytime soon however the three women above have all rocked the look as good as I can image in can get. Any thoughts?

Printed Shoe Trend

We all know there's nothing that can complete an outfit more so than a fabulous pair of shoes. One little trend I'm noticing emerge right now is brightly coloured printed shoes. It's the perfect way to spice up a neutral outfit and if your like me and you love your all-black ensembles, take a step on the wild side by adding a punchy patterned shoe. From florals, to polka dots, geometric patterns and animal prints. My guess is that this trend is going to be huge this summer so start keeping your eye out for good buys now!

The Gallery on First Street

I've recently wrote a short article on The Gallery on First Street for the Calgary Fashion
Please click here to read the full article.

The Gallery on First Street is one of the rarer "pop-up" shops in Calgary. The space was meant to provide a more interactive experience with their clients. This store in particular carries both casual and semi-formal men's wear. Although mostly standard styles, I did found a few unique items in the store. This place definitely offers a young and energetic vibe to their audience.
The guys from The Gallery on First Street: Liam, Reid and Aaron

They have also launched a new men's tank line called TOTO RICO (Totally Rich), which prints were designed by Teddy Celebration.
TOTO RICO: Designer Teddy Celebration

The Gallery on First Street carries many labels that I like and they offered them at a very good price.
I know that on my last post I said I will talk about Brooks Brothers. Unfortunately, I am still working on it. It will be up as soon as it is finished :-)

FINALLY!! the winner of the iPhone4 Agnis b. phone case should receive my email. Congratulation!! Thank you to those who sent in an email.

Fukushima - The Biggest Catastrophe In The History of Mankind!

"Fukushima is the biggest industrial catastrophe in the history of mankind," Arnold Gundersen, a former nuclear industry senior vice president, told Al Jazeera.

Japan's 9.0 earthquake on March 11 caused a massive tsunami that crippled the cooling systems at the Tokyo Electric Power Company's (TEPCO) nuclear plant in Fukushima, Japan. It also led to hydrogen explosions and reactor meltdowns that forced evacuations of those living within a 20km radius of the plant.

Gundersen, a licensed reactor operator with 39 years of nuclear power engineering experience, managing and coordinating projects at 70 nuclear power plants around the US, says the Fukushima nuclear plant likely has more exposed reactor cores than commonly believed.

"Fukushima has three nuclear reactors exposed and four fuel cores exposed," he said, "You probably have the equivalent of 20 nuclear reactor cores because of the fuel cores, and they are all in desperate need of being cooled, and there is no means to cool them effectively."

TEPCO has been spraying water on several of the reactors and fuel cores, but this has led to even greater problems, such as radiation being emitted into the air in steam and evaporated sea water - as well as generating hundreds of thousands of tons of highly radioactive sea water that has to be disposed of.

"The problem is how to keep it cool," says Gundersen. "They are pouring in water and the question is what are they going to do with the waste that comes out of that system, because it is going to contain plutonium and uranium. Where do you put the water?"

Even though the plant is now shut down, fission products such as uranium continue to generate heat, and therefore require cooling.

"The fuels are now a molten blob at the bottom of the reactor," Gundersen added. "TEPCO announced they had a melt through. A melt down is when the fuel collapses to the bottom of the reactor, and a melt through means it has melted through some layers. That blob is incredibly radioactive, and now you have water on top of it. The water picks up enormous amounts of radiation, so you add more water and you are generating hundreds of thousands of tons of highly radioactive water."

Independent scientists have been monitoring the locations of radioactive "hot spots" around Japan, and their findings are disconcerting.

"We have 20 nuclear cores exposed, the fuel pools have several cores each, that is 20 times the potential to be released than Chernobyl," said Gundersen. "The data I'm seeing shows that we are finding hot spots further away than we had from Chernobyl, and the amount of radiation in many of them was the amount that caused areas to be declared no-man's-land for Chernobyl. We are seeing square kilometres being found 60 to 70 kilometres away from the reactor. You can't clean all this up. We still have radioactive wild boar in Germany, 30 years after Chernobyl."

Radiation monitors for children

Japan's Nuclear Emergency Response Headquarters finally admitted earlier this month that reactors 1, 2, and 3 at the Fukushima plant experienced full meltdowns.

TEPCO announced that the accident probably released more radioactive material into the environment than Chernobyl, making it the worst nuclear accident on record.

Meanwhile, a nuclear waste advisor to the Japanese government reported that about 966 square kilometres near the power station - an area roughly 17 times the size of Manhattan - is now likely uninhabitable.

In the US, physician Janette Sherman MD and epidemiologist Joseph Mangano published an essay shedding light on a 35 per cent spike in infant mortality in northwest cities that occurred after the Fukushima meltdown, and may well be the result of fallout from the stricken nuclear plant.

The eight cities included in the report are San Jose, Berkeley, San Francisco, Sacramento, Santa Cruz, Portland, Seattle, and Boise, and the time frame of the report included the ten weeks immediately following the disaster.

"There is and should be concern about younger people being exposed, and the Japanese government will be giving out radiation monitors to children," Dr MV Ramana, a physicist with the Programme on Science and Global Security at Princeton University who specialises in issues of nuclear safety, told Al Jazeera.

Dr Ramana explained that he believes the primary radiation threat continues to be mostly for residents living within 50km of the plant, but added: "There are going to be areas outside of the Japanese government's 20km mandatory evacuation zone where radiation is higher. So that could mean evacuation zones in those areas as well."

Gundersen points out that far more radiation has been released than has been reported.

"They recalculated the amount of radiation released, but the news is really not talking about this," he said. "The new calculations show that within the first week of the accident, they released 2.3 times as much radiation as they thought they released in the first 80 days."

According to Gundersen, the exposed reactors and fuel cores are continuing to release microns of caesium, strontium, and plutonium isotopes. These are referred to as "hot particles".

"We are discovering hot particles everywhere in Japan, even in Tokyo," he said. "Scientists are finding these everywhere. Over the last 90 days these hot particles have continued to fall and are being deposited in high concentrations. A lot of people are picking these up in car engine air filters."

Radioactive air filters from cars in Fukushima prefecture and Tokyo are now common, and Gundersen says his sources are finding radioactive air filters in the greater Seattle area of the US as well.

The hot particles on them can eventually lead to cancer.

"These get stuck in your lungs or GI tract, and they are a constant irritant," he explained, "One cigarette doesn't get you, but over time they do. These [hot particles] can cause cancer, but you can't measure them with a Geiger counter. Clearly people in Fukushima prefecture have breathed in a large amount of these particles. Clearly the upper West Coast of the US has people being affected. That area got hit pretty heavy in April."

Blame the US?

In reaction to the Fukushima catastrophe, Germany is phasing out all of its nuclear reactors over the next decade. In a referendum vote this Monday, 95 per cent of Italians voted in favour of blocking a nuclear power revival in their country. A recent newspaper poll in Japan shows nearly three-quarters of respondents favour a phase-out of nuclear power in Japan.

Why have alarms not been sounded about radiation exposure in the US?

Nuclear operator Exelon Corporation has been among Barack Obama's biggest campaign donors, and is one of the largest employers in Illinois where Obama was senator. Exelon has donated more than $269,000 to his political campaigns, thus far. Obama also appointed Exelon CEO John Rowe to his Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future.

Dr Shoji Sawada is a theoretical particle physicist and Professor Emeritus at Nagoya University in Japan.
He is concerned about the types of nuclear plants in his country, and the fact that most of them are of US design.

"Most of the reactors in Japan were designed by US companies who did not care for the effects of earthquakes," Dr Sawada told Al Jazeera. "I think this problem applies to all nuclear power stations across Japan."

Using nuclear power to produce electricity in Japan is a product of the nuclear policy of the US, something Dr Sawada feels is also a large component of the problem.

"Most of the Japanese scientists at that time, the mid-1950s, considered that the technology of nuclear energy was under development or not established enough, and that it was too early to be put to practical use," he explained. "The Japan Scientists Council recommended the Japanese government not use this technology yet, but the government accepted to use enriched uranium to fuel nuclear power stations, and was thus subjected to US government policy."

As a 13-year-old, Dr Sawada experienced the US nuclear attack against Japan from his home, situated just 1400 metres from the hypocentre of the Hiroshima bomb.

"I think the Fukushima accident has caused the Japanese people to abandon the myth that nuclear power stations are safe," he said. "Now the opinions of the Japanese people have rapidly changed. Well beyond half the population believes Japan should move towards natural electricity."

A problem of infinite proportions

Dr Ramana expects the plant reactors and fuel cores to be cooled enough for a shutdown within two years.
"But it is going to take a very long time before the fuel can be removed from the reactor," he added. "Dealing with the cracking and compromised structure and dealing with radiation in the area will take several years, there's no question about that."

Dr Sawada is not as clear about how long a cold shutdown could take, and said the problem will be "the effects from caesium-137 that remains in the soil and the polluted water around the power station and underground. It will take a year, or more time, to deal with this".

Gundersen pointed out that the units are still leaking radiation.

"They are still emitting radioactive gases and an enormous amount of radioactive liquid," he said. "It will be at least a year before it stops boiling, and until it stops boiling, it's going to be cranking out radioactive steam and liquids."

Gundersen worries about more earthquake aftershocks, as well as how to cool two of the units.

"Unit four is the most dangerous, it could topple," he said. "After the earthquake in Sumatra there was an 8.6 [aftershock] about 90 days later, so we are not out of the woods yet. And you're at a point where, if that happens, there is no science for this, no one has ever imagined having hot nuclear fuel lying outside the fuel pool. They've not figured out how to cool units three and four."

Gundersen's assessment of solving this crisis is grim.

"Units one through three have nuclear waste on the floor, the melted core, that has plutonium in it, and that has to be removed from the environment for hundreds of thousands of years," he said. "Somehow, robotically, they will have to go in there and manage to put it in a container and store it for infinity, and that technology doesn't exist. Nobody knows how to pick up the molten core from the floor, there is no solution available now for picking that up from the floor."

Dr Sawada says that the creation of nuclear fission generates radioactive materials for which there is simply no knowledge informing us how to dispose of the radioactive waste safely.

"Until we know how to safely dispose of the radioactive materials generated by nuclear plants, we should postpone these activities so as not to cause further harm to future generations," he explained. "To do otherwise is simply an immoral act, and that is my belief, both as a scientist and as a survivor of the Hiroshima atomic bombing."

Gundersen believes it will take experts at least ten years to design and implement the plan.

"So ten to 15 years from now maybe we can say the reactors have been dismantled, and in the meantime you wind up contaminating the water," Gundersen said. "We are already seeing Strontium [at] 250 times the allowable limits in the water table at Fukushima. Contaminated water tables are incredibly difficult to clean. So I think we will have a contaminated aquifer in the area of the Fukushima site for a long, long time to come."

Unfortunately, the history of nuclear disasters appears to back Gundersen's assessment.

"With Three Mile Island and Chernobyl, and now with Fukushima, you can pinpoint the exact day and time they started," he said, "But they never end."

Corporate outfit ideas

I've recently had to think about putting a corporate wardrobe together and to be honest, it's actually been quite difficult! At first I thought I should stick to black or grey pants and simple crisp shirts however now I'm realising that with a little creativity there are plenty of amazing combination's you can experiment with that can still be functional, fashionable and professional.

PARK Sample Sale/ Clinton Kelly in Calgary

This is going to be a long post. :-) Many things were going on during the past weekend (PARK Sample Sale, Clinton Kelly, Comic Expo, My high school reunion, A new T-shirt label launch etc…). I had to rework my schedule a few times in order to squeeze all of those events into one day :-). Okay…PARK Sample Sale was held at the Gerry Thomas Gallery. Four Canadian designers: Caitlin Power, Anne b. Accessories, Paul Hardy and Jalu were showcasing and selling their previous season's items, as well as taking pre-orders for the upcoming season.
(1.) Designer Caitlin Power and me; (2.) Photo courtesy of Caitlin Power

I've been following (1.) Caitlin Power's designs ever since I saw her at the AFW couple years ago. (2.) "Edgy-Elegance" is the term I would use to describe her work. I like the fact that she uses a combination of materials (ie: fabric and leather) in her pieces. Her designs also emphasized the beauty of women's figure.
(3.) Anne Corpuz-Bacalso and me; (4.) Photo courtesy of Anne b. designs; (5.) Photo by Katrina Olson

Designer (3.) Anne Corpuz-Bacalso of Anne b. Accessories is a newcomer in this city's fashion scene. (4.) The main components of her accessories are made of resins, horns and other natural elements. Two things in particular I like a lot about Anne b. First is that her accessories were made of (5.) natural elements that spills out the taste of natural beauty. Second is knowing these accessories were made from factories in her home country, Philippines. Establishing the factory there provided jobs for people who are in need of money to survive, and in part boost their economy. Anne b. Accessories is beauty with a big heart.
(6. & 7.) Paul Hardy designs; (7.) Photo from: thestar.com

No need to further introduce (6. & 7.) Paul Hardy and I am sure most of us agrees with his talent in fashion designs. He is quite a well established fashion designer in this city with his boutique in Kensington by appointment. Mr. Hardy had been in many fashion shows including Toronto Fashion Week. He was given the review "A star is born" when he showcased his first collection.
(8.) Jalu designer and me; (9.) Photo courtesy of Jalu

Forth designer at the PARK Sample Sale is (8.) Jalu. All of her designs I found (9.) displayed a sense of cultural human behavior and contained a hint of Zen philosophy. It is something that I like to explore further, so I did purchased the Darkhan piece. :-) Below are other pictures I took with people I met during this event:
(10.) Fashion blogger KD (The Girl With The Messy Hair) and me, On me: Detachment Blazer, Virgin Blak pants, Raf Simons Sandals, Chanel Necklace; (11.) Katrina Olson and me; Photos: The Girl With The Messy Hair
(11.) Fashion blogger The Diva Lounge and me; (12.)  Bano & eeMee Creative Director Aleem Arif and me; Photos: Katrina Olson
After the PARK Sample Sale, I went briefly to Telus Convention Centre and listen in to Clinton Kelly, one of the hosts for TLC's popular TV show: What Not To Wear. A red-carpet event, followed by an hour long fashion show showcasing Canadian fashion designers, including eeMee and N.R.T. Fashions, occurred prior to Clinton Kelly's appearance.
(I.) Clinton Kelly; (II. and III.) Clinton Kelly at Telus Convention Centre; Photos: me

And of course…95% of the audience were women between 25-45. I can see why women likes Clinton. Other than the fact that he gives some good advice on styles, he is also quite a charming person. He claimed that most of the women who were on the shows dressed sloppy either they were "freaks" or "sluts" lol…but what sinked in my mind the most was his quote: ‎"Your beauty is different and that's important...Lose the haters in your life...and embrace your own imperfection" Indeed inspiring to many people. Other photos I took at the event:
(IV.) Gorgeous Studio: Karen Judge
(V.) Loved her style: (VI.) Her shoes: Camilla Skovgaard
(VII.) Ladies that helped models getting ready to go on runway; one of my friends Polly.

I did not stay for the entire thing. Unfortunately, there was another event I need to attend, but I did had fun. :-) Next blog entry, I will talk about Brooks Brothers classic collection.

N.R.T. Fashions (in love with)

I briefly met and chatted with N.R.T. Fashions designer Nicole Rita Tomney today, because I was interested in her collection, which showcased at the AFW 2011 last month. For someone who recently got out of fashion school, she definitely has a lot on her plate. Not only she and her fashion designs were requested for video shoots in Mexico, she is also planning for her next collection designs and also traveling to Eastern Canada along with her inspiration. I admired Nicole's boldness and courage to establish her fashion line in this city. It is my privilege to be able to own one of her designs.

Mylookbook Loves: June 2011

The Mylookbook Winter Issue is finally online!

This week I'm excited to let you know that I've put a fresh new issue of the Mylookbook digital magazine online! I must admit that life has been a little hectic lately and it's been hard to keep up with everything going on, however, I have managed to put together a winter issue for you featuring not only some of my favourite looks for this winter, but also interviews with people who have inspired me recently. One such person is photographer Jessie Bush who I met while in Sydney for fashion week. She takes street style fashion pics just as beautifully as Scott Schuman of The Sartorialist blog or any other top street snapper as far as I'm concerned. I'm just flattered I was able to meet and chat with her before she becomes too famous!

I think you'll like my latest personal style blogger obsession who's website I've been checking out daily (and dreaming of warmer weather). LA fashion blogger Julie Sarinana AKA  Jules of www.sincerelyjules.com is part of glamour.com's carefully selected 'young and posh' blogger network and is quickly becoming an influential force in the fashion blogosphere.

Luxury at hand with the the Gucci Purse Spray!

I found out recently that one of my absolute FAVOURITE fragrances, Flora By Gucci is available in a handy purse size spray! If your anything like me, you don't feel fully dressed when not wearing perfume and on some mornings (especially in my house) it's almost impossible to walk out the front door without forgetting something. I absolutely hate it when I realise I've forgotten to wear perfume however thanks to this nifty little discovery, I now have my Gucci Flora on me at all times. The set contains four 15ml glass vials which can be fitted into a chic little case that sits nicely in even the smallest of bags. Brilliant.
The Flora by Gucci EdT Purse Spray is $119, stockist phone (02) 9695 5678 www.gucci.com

Swisspers Scrub and Mask In One

I have to admit, I'm including this product from a third party perspective. When it landed on my desk this month my 16 year old daughter Bree walked into my office and apparently desperately in need of a face mask, she swiped it away, promising to bring it back.

It's almost a month later and I haven't seen it since. When asking her about the mysterious disappearance she's declared that it's the most AMAZING thing she's used on her skin and really doesn't want to part with it. Like any teenager she suffers from occasional break outs and is always looking for products to clear up her skin. She's said that this has not only cleared her skin but is keeping it super soft and smooth. I'm not complaining at only $10.99 a bottle!

Amazing Face: clever beauty tricks, should-own products + spectacularly useful how-to-do-its By Zoe Foster

I was first aware of Zoe Foster when she became the editor of www.primped.com.au.

Since then I've been a huge fan of her refreshingly witty writing style and was super excited when she released each of her fictional novels Air Kisses and Playing the Field (I absolutely loved both of them) .

It's no shock that her most recent publishing venture Amazing Face is another awesome accomplishment.  Zoë suggests makeup colours and brands for every occasion, skin care routines,  products for every age, and step-by-step instructions for winged eyeliner, sensational red lips, foolproof tanning, simple updos, sexy-second-day hair, and so much more . She is one multi-talented lady who constantly inspires and entertains me. If your already a fan of her work, simply want to know more about beauty or you just feel like buying something new, this book is well worth your dollars.

Ministry of sound running trax winter 2011

I'm generally more a fan of walking to get my exercise however I've always loved the 'thought' of running and have been wanting to make an attempt at upgrading my exercise routine for a while now. A friend recently told me about music created especially for running (and keeping your pace even) which I'd previously never heard of.  I mean, I knew people ran listening to music however I didn't know there was music made especially for running.

Ministry of Sound Running Trax: Winter 2011 has beats for your warm up to your cool down. The 3 discs are titled jog, run and sprint, each disc with it's own BPM-synched track list, programmed to enhance your training session and ensure you get the most from your fitness routine. Again, I can't personally say I've given it a go yet, however my daughter Taya says it's fantastic!

Winter weekend movie: Source Code

Anything starring Jake Gyllenhaal is worth watching as far as I'm concerned. Source Code is no exception and with plenty of action, romance and nail biting twists, this movie was a roller coaster ride the entire way through.

Gyllenhaal's character, US Air Force Captain Colter Stevens, wakes up suddenly on train. He soon realises that he is in another mans body, the train is then blown up by a terrorist's bomb, and this is where the story begins.

My husband and I both enjoyed Source Code equally as much as each other, a definite plus if your anything like us and have trouble agreeing on what to see!

Something to love about Mondays - Offspring!

It's been a while since I've been completely obsessed with a TV series and Offspring had me from Episode One. Every single little thing about the show has me completely addicted. From Nina's quirky outfits to her fabulously dysfunctional family. It's utter chaos all weaved together so beautifully I can't help but be in the happiest of moods at the end of every show.

How amazing are Nina's outfits! My summer wardrobe inspiration is sorted!
