Fashion Week Survival Guide

With Rosemount Australian Fashion Week fast approaching, I thought it would be fun to chat to a few fashion industry insiders, not only about how they make sure they look amazing the entire time, but also how they survive the long week of juggling work & play...

The Celebrity (& style icon)
What are your beauty essentials during the week?

3 things you will definitely have in your handbag?
Water, my IPhone and La Mer lip balm.

It's always cold in Sydney this time of year, especially the nights, so you have a staple coat/jacket you'll be keeping snug in?

Is there anything special you do to keep up your energy during the week?
I love Epsom Salt baths, I feel rejuvenated afterwards. I also try to get to get to the gym as much as possible.

Where would we find you relaxing between shows?
This year between shows I will be running back to the dance studios for Dancing With The Stars. I need to train as much as possible, but I want to see as much fashion as I can fit in!

Do you have any particular outfits put together or items you've decided you'll definitely be wearing yet?
No – I work on more of a wing-it-on-the-morning-of kind of strategy. The only guarantee is that there’ll be lots of black.

What are your beauty essentials during the week?
YSL cream blush, MAC Face and Body Foundation, and cuticle oil for doing something productive during all that waiting around.
How will you be accessorizing?
I have a sneaky feeling that my Rag and Bone Newbury boots – the world’s most comfortable shoe – will not be off my feet all week long. Which reminds me that I need to buy them in another colour asap…

3 things you will definitely have in your handbag?
Pumpkin seeds, my Blackberry, the schedule.

What handbag will you use to carry all your necessities in?
I’m going to try to not lug the world around with me this year so I’ll be carrying the very mini-sized Mulberry Lily.

What do you most look forward to during RAFW?
The ham and cheese croissants from The Renaissance Patisserie are always a highlight!

It's always cold in Sydney this time of year, especially the nights, so you have a staple coat/jacket you'll be keeping snug in?
I’ll be all wrapped up in a swingy camel cape-coat (and will probably never take it off so I may as well wear the same outfit underneath every day).

Where would we find you relaxing between shows?
Upstairs in the bar with everyone else.

Do you have any particular outfits put together or items you've decided you'll definitely be wearing yet?

Comfort and warmth are the only criteria for me. I wear a lot of black because it’s practical. I have a new McQueen blazer that I love and a few new pieces of vintage jewellery that will probably get a run too.

How will you be accessorizing?
Nothing too heavy or clunky – I have to be able to type.

Nurofen, Trail Mix and battery charger.

What handbag will you use to carry all your necessities in?
YSL Downtown and Mulberry Messenger.

Are there any shows in particular your looking forward to seeing this year?

Tony Maticevski (he’s back) Lover (ditto), Zimmermann turn 20, Yasmin Le Bon is walking for Little Joe, Dion Lee, Romance Was Born – there’s a lot this year.

It's always cold in Sydney this time of year, especially the nights, so you have a staple coat/jacket you'll be keeping snug in?
It’s all about capes and leather this year. I have a great camel coat cape (vintage) and black studded Simone leather Jacket that will be on rotation.

Is there anything special you do to keep up your energy during the week?
I try to keep exercising – it means getting up early but it makes a massive difference.

Is this your first time attending RAFW?
It is.

What are you most excited about?
I'm excited to be a part of the buzzing atmosphere and to be surrounded by people who have similar interests to you and respect what you're doing. I'm even more excited to be there as a "blogger" representing my brand, Gary Pepper Vintage, and of course - the breathtaking shows and clothes. What isn't exciting about RAFW?

Do you have any particular outfits put together or items you've decided you'll definitely be wearing yet?
I think it's just dawned on me how unprepared I am for RAFW. I either stumble across something by pure chance when I'm op shopping or I'm shopping online, so if I was to order anything online it would have to be pretty soon for it to get here in time. I recently purchased a pair of Charlotte Olympia ankle boots so they're going to be a necessity.

What beauty essentials will you be packing for the week?
Cleanser, moisturiser, primer. My skin can't handle a lot of heavy make up so my ELES primer is the best thing to ever happen to me. I like to keep my make up simple and clean so i'll have my MAC fluidline, MAC illuminator, and Estee Lauder Lip Pencil in Wine.

How will you be accessorizing?
I tend to go with 'less is more' with my accessories, so I'll be sticking to statement rings, a gold watch, a large gold cuff and hopefully a simple and elegant rose gold belt by Sass & Bide. I keep styling it with several outfits in my mind but I have to justify spending the money on it first.

3 things you will definitely have in your handbag?
SLR, iPhone, business cards.

What handbag will you use to carry all your necessities in?
I plan on taking several, which are a mix of Alexander Wang, vintage and my own Gary Pepper tote bag. It's perfect for carrying my camera without getting in the way.

Are there any shows in particular your looking forward to seeing this year?
Camilla and Marc, Dion Lee, Ellery, Karla Spetic, Gary Bigeni, Ginger and Smart.

It's always cold in Sydney this time of year, especially the nights, so you have a staple coat/jacket you'll be keeping snug in?
I've been living in a beautiful navy coat with a large fur collar and cute little pom poms from Modcloth.com ,or several vintage faux fur coats that keep me nice and warm at night. They're not too heavy and perfect for this weather.

Do you have any particular outfits put together or items you've  decided you'll definitely be wearing yet?
Oh gosh no.. I never plan an outfit more then an hour before departure or I will change my mind anyway. It all depends on the weather, the mood and the daily schedule.

What are your beauty essentials during the week?
Lots and lots of water to stay hydrated. Night time hair treatments are always a good idea to keep the locks in place throughout those long days.

How will you be accessorizing?
Less is more.. I will always have my gold belt ring on which was passed down from my grandmother to my mother and then to me and a silver anklet my sister bought me.

3 things you will definitely have in your handbag?
Blackberry, Moleskin note-pad and Eclipse mints

What handbag will you use to carry all your necessities in?
One of my Givenchy Melancholia bags. (When I fall for something, I fall).

What do you most look forward to during RAFW?
Having fun! Its so great to see all of my friends in the industry in one place. We all love to celebrate the creativity of the designers and catch up over their creations and go home to upload them to our Buyers Diary album on Facebook so you can see it all and have you say on what we should buy.

Are there any shows in particular your looking forward to seeing this year?
Romance Was Born always put on a show worthy of a standing ovation, previously I have felt like I had just witnessed a beautiful performance and not a parade - they are true artists when it comes to presentation. Dion Lee's collections have grown from spectacular to indescribable beauty. I cannot wait to see what form of perfection he has in store for us this year.

It's always cold in Sydney this time of year, especially the nights, so you have a staple coat/jacket you'll be keeping snug in?
Actually, every year at fashion week it is surprisingly hot! Its a great time of year as the international buyers come and enjoy our beautiful city. The evenings can get a little chilly. I don't really feel the cold so I will be making use of a floor length vintage kimono this year which looks great over any outfit with a heel.

Is there anything special you do to keep up your energy during the week?
I will make sure I get to yoga and go for some soft sand runs bright and early. I have also recently quit coffee entirely so green tea bags will be piled in my handbag for any given moment of desperation.

Where would we find you relaxing between shows?
Relaxing? Impossible. Between shows we are privately viewing collections - no rest for the wicked.

Do you have any particular outfits put together or items you've decided
you'll definitely be wearing yet?
I don't have any particular outfits planned just yet, it will depend a little bit on the weather.

What are your beauty essentials during the week?

Lots of concealer! The days can be quite long so concealer to cover my tired eyes is a must.

How will you be accessorizing?

I will be accessorising with lots of statement necklaces and rings. I am in love with DANNIJO at the moment so I will be wearing lots of their pieces.

3 things you will definitely have in your handbag?

Pawpaw ointment, iPhone and notepad.

What handbag will you use to carry all your necessities in?

My Alexander Wang Coco bag. An oldie but a goodie.

What do you most look forward to during RAFW?
Catching up with everyone in the industry. We don't all get to catch up together very often so it is a lovely opportunity to see everyone.

Are there any shows in particular your looking forward to seeing this year?
Camilla and Marc always do such a beautiful show so I am looking forward to seeing that. I am also really looking forward to seeing Arnsdorf. Their show was so beautiful last year so I am keen to see if they can do it again.

It's always cold in Sydney this time of year, especially the nights, so you have a staple coat/jacket you'll be keeping snug in?

The Camilla and Marc Chase Jacket from their Fall Winter 11 collection. The lambswool collar will be perfect for keeping out the winter chill.

Is there anything special you do to keep up your energy during the week?
Drinks lots of coffee! My health kick always starts the week after fashion week!

Where would we find you relaxing between shows?

The Rosemount Bar is the perfect place to re-energise so you will find me relaxing there between shows.

Do you have any particular outfits put together or items you've decided you'll definitely be wearing yet?
Usually I will purchase a few items so I'll have a few prepared outfits, however usually I plan the night before by laying out what I want to wear with what accessories and what shoes etc. I will always buy at least a new pair of shoes to wear to RAFW. I think shoes and accessories can make or break your outfit.

What are your beauty essentials during the week?
Try and get a good nights sleep, no doubt with off site runway shows and the vast number of shows on from 9am to sometimes midnight you want to look your best. Be sure to keep hydrated and keep your makeup looking fresh and natural.

You mentioned last year you hung out with Susie Bubble and  Phil Oh of StreetPeeper.com, what was that like? Is there anything you learned from them about surviving the week?
I really wanted to meet Susie Lau of Style Bubble and Phil Oh and happened to bump into them outside the OPT during RAFW, we hung out and admired each others' outfits and accessories and I got a photo with both of them. They were both super down to earth and friendly, Susie has the cutest British accent ever. Basically they were flown in especially for RAFW and with their busy schedules, it only left time for runway shows and sleep so it would be advisable to not stay out too late and get a good nights' rest to stay refreshed and energised for the full week.

3 things you will definitely have in your handbag?
My blackberry, mints, compact foundation/mirror

What handbag will you use to carry all your necessities in?
My beloved Chloe black python Paraty, its a great size as its not too big and not too small. It can fit all the essentials.

What do you most look forward to during RAFW?
I love the hype, the lead up to RAFW, the buzz and excitement it brings to Sydney, the ability to dress up and wear amazing shoes, hang out with my fashion friends and of course being privileged enough to attend the runway shows and mingle with Sydney's fashion elite.

Are there any shows in particular your looking forward to seeing this year?
I am very excited to see what Dion Lee brings to his new collection, Lover, my friend's label Dhini, the new Generation shows and Elliot Ward-Fear which is probably one of the most anticipated shows this year.

It's always cold in Sydney this time of year, especially the nights, so you have a staple coat/jacket you'll be keeping snug in?
I will be bringing this snug velvet soft fur like jacket with me, its not bulky at all so I can slip it in my handbag without worry.

Where would we find you relaxing between shows?
Probably in a cafe in The Rocks, in The Strand or in the HP Bloggers Bar area in the Media Area.
